Evalyn Washington Humphrey

Namesake

Evalyn Washington Humphrey is a trailblazing educator who was Alabama’s first Black female high school administrator. 

She was a leader in the creation of Huntsville’s first magnet program, (formerly known as the Creative Learning Center) the Academy for Academics and Arts. For more than 40 years, AAA has influenced the development of Huntsville City Schools arts programs and where E Foundation hosts all current programming. Her unwavering commitment to educational equity, accessibility to the arts and community empowerment shapes the groundwork of the E Foundation’s mission.

Evalyn, born in Huntsville, Alabama, began her educational journey at W.H. Councill High School before earning a BS degree from Howard University. Her commitment to lifelong learning led her through the master’s program at Alabama A&M University and the doctoral program at Vanderbilt University.

After gaining valuable experience in the D.C. metro area and the NYC school system, Evalyn returned home to Huntsville. Her dedication to education was recognized when the Alabama Parent and Teacher Association named her Outstanding Principal of the Year.

With 31 years of service in Huntsville City Schools as an educator, counselor, and administrator, Evalyn retired, leaving a lasting impact. Her interests in education and the arts remain a principal focus of our work.
