Dance @ School

Our programs offer schools the opportunity to explore the process of using the arts to enhance student success. Dance@School programs are tailored to the specific needs of the classroom teacher or organization, ensuring a customized experience for all participants.

First Position

The First Position curriculum is based on the National Dance  Education Organization’s Standards for Dance in Early Childhood. Your school is proud to present to your child the opportunity to study dance on school premises.  Once a week, a First Position instructor transforms a classroom into a dance studio.

CLASS DESCRIPTION: Creative Movement. An introduction to classical ballet   principles, contemporary / modern improvisation techniques and basic tumbling skills.  The course includes elemental coordination, rhythm fundamentals, exploration and development of locomotor movements. Provides an excellent foundation for sports participation and the study of all forms of dance.

World of Dance

Introduction to basic dance skills, history and culture of selected dance genres, and the study of the World Dances: i.e. Salsa, Tarantella, Gumboot, Hip Hop, and more. Dance studies can be tied to social studies curriculum (i.e. U.S. or World).

CLASS DESCRIPTION: An introduction to basic dance skills, study of the following World Dance genres and more: Salsa, Tarantella, Gumboot, and Hip Hop. The course includes elemental coordination, rhythm fundamentals, exploration and development of locomotor movements through jazz dance technique. Provides an excellent foundation for the strength and flexibility needed for athletics. This program is available for students in grades 2-5.

Books that Dance

This residency will guide children to improvise imaginatively in response to the language and visual imagery from children’s books. (Examples: The Tiny Seed, Esperanza Rising) Grades PK-8.

 

CLASS DESCRIPTION: In this arts integration class, students will explore academic concepts through movement, using improvisation to bring stories to life. Guided by language and visual imagery from children’s books, they will develop creative expression while deepening their understanding of the subject matter. This engaging approach encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and a dynamic connection between literacy and the arts.

Social Emotional Learning

This residency will explore the basics of dance/movement, includes a writing day, a visual arts component, and culminates with students creating and sharing original choreography around one of the 5 components of SEL. Grades PK-8.

 CLASS DESCRIPTION: This arts integration class uses dance, writing, and visual arts to help students explore the five components of Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Through movement and creative expression, students will develop self-awareness, teamwork, and communication skills. The residency culminates in students choreographing and sharing original dances that reflect their personal understanding of SEL concepts

Professional Learning

Our Professional Learning program introduces dance pedagogy and provides resources to support the use of creative movement in P-12 classrooms. The program addresses the psychomotor, affective, and cognitive domains of learning, offering a holistic approach to teaching. Workshop participants will actively explore basic dance concepts and consider how to adapt them to their specific content areas. These workshops are made possible through grant funding.

We can begin a program with one class of 8 or two classes of 6. 

There is no cost to the facility.  All fees and tuition can be paid by the participating families or grant funding may be available.
